Delete your SmartSwap account
This page explains how to delete your SmartSwap account and what happens to your data when you do.
Deletion is permanent. There is no undo and no grace period — once confirmed, your account is removed immediately.
How to delete your account
You can delete your account yourself, from inside the app or from the website. No email or support request is needed.
- Sign in to SmartSwap — in the mobile app, or at smartswap.ca
- Open Profile
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Show Advanced Options
- Under Danger Zone, tap Delete Account
- Confirm when prompted
Your account is deleted as soon as you confirm.
If you can't sign in
Most people in this situation haven't lost anything — they've just forgotten whether they used Continue with Google or Continue with Apple. Try both on the sign-in screen. Only one of them will have an account attached.
If you genuinely can't get into your Google or Apple account, recovering it directly with Google or Apple is the fastest route: both have their own recovery processes, and once you're back in, the steps above take under a minute.
If neither of those works, email [email protected] and include:
- the name on your SmartSwap account
- the hospital and unit you were assigned to
- roughly when you signed up
- whether you used Google or Apple to sign in
We use those details to confirm the account is yours. We will not delete an account without being satisfied that the person asking owns it — without that check, anyone could delete a stranger's account and destroy their schedule.
Verified requests are actioned within 30 days.
If you used Apple's Hide My Email, the address on your SmartSwap account is an
@privaterelay.appleid.comrelay that you can't send email from. Write to us from your normal address instead and say that you signed in with Apple.
What is deleted
All of the following are removed permanently and immediately:
- Your profile — name, email address, and profile photo
- Your sign-in connections — the link between SmartSwap and your Google or Apple account
- All of your shifts, including any imported from your employer's scheduling system
- Your hospitals, units, and roles
- Your preferences and settings
- All of your notifications
- Your notification device registrations, so no further push notifications can reach you
- Your active sessions, signing you out everywhere
Any trade requests you had sent are withdrawn, and any you had received are declined, before your account is removed. The shifts involved are returned to their owners.
What is kept, and why
Completed trade records are kept, with your identity removed.
When you trade a shift, the record of that trade is part of another user's history too — it's how they know what they agreed to and when. Deleting it would destroy their record of a real event that involved them.
So instead of deleting completed trades, we detach them from you. Your name, email, and profile are removed, and the trade is reattributed to an anonymous placeholder shown as "Deleted User". Nobody can identify you from a trade record after your account is deleted.
These anonymised records are kept indefinitely, because they form the permanent history of the other user's account.
Shifts you traded away stay with the person who received them. Once a trade completes, that shift belongs to them, and it is theirs to keep.
Payment records, if you ever purchased a subscription, are held by our payment processor (Stripe) rather than by SmartSwap, and are retained for the period required by tax and financial record-keeping law. SmartSwap does not store your card details at any time.
If you have an active subscription when you delete your account, it is cancelled automatically. Annual subscribers may receive a partial refund: we charge our standard monthly rate for each 30-day period you held the subscription, rounded up, and refund whatever remains. Depending on how long you have had it, that may be small or zero. Monthly subscriptions are cancelled without a refund. This is automatic — you don't need to ask. Full details are in the Terms of Service.
Backups. Deleted data may persist in encrypted database backups for up to 30 days before those backups are rotated out. It is not accessible or restorable during that time, and it is not used for any purpose.
